How to read this
One final annual snapshot, four distinct measures
Average retail price is EIA’s 2024 all-sector average in cents per kilowatthour. It is not a residential rate or a current tariff. Capacity, generation, and retail sales are state totals; selected-state bars are scaled against one another while the U.S. total stays explicit beside the chart.
- Net summer capacity is maximum net output available at summer peak demand; it is not nameplate capacity. Net generation subtracts electricity used at generating stations.
- No forecasts, planned retirements, load-growth estimates, or market-regulation classifications are included.
- No state totals are converted into per-capita or per-capacity measures.
- The national 12.94¢/kWh value is the table value and is corroborated by EIA Annual Table 2.10; 12.68 is the 2023 value.
- EIA publishes U.S. capacity as 1,230,416 MW; adding the displayed rounded state/DC rows gives 1,230,420 MW. This sample retains EIA’s published national total.
